These include being able reproduce it, preparing derivative works from the original and distributing copies for financial gain. Although assigned automatically upon creation, copyrights can be registered with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office for further protection. Copyrights apply to creative works like novels and artwork. Patents are a type of intellectual property that give their owner the legal right to exclude others from making, using or selling an invention for limited time in exchange for publishing enabling disclosure. In most countries patent holder must sue someone infringing upon it and enforce their legal rights with litigation if needed.
